Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid ended in a 1-0 win for Rayo as they wait a little longer for their La Liga survival.

Zinedine Zidane made wholesale changes in the squad going into the match against their city rivals.

Real started sharp in the opening exchanges as Marcelo forced a good save from Rayo goalkeeper from a short corner but Gareth Bale could not make the follow up count.

Mariano Diaz had a great opportunity to put Madrid ahead after Dani Carvajal slid in a low cross but his intended finish was blocked after making a wonderful first touch.

Thibaut Courtois who is having his first start in Zidane’s side was called into action as he made two stunning saves within minutes of two Rayo attacks

Rayo finally got their noses in front after the VAR adjudged Jesus Vallejo to have pulled down a striker and Adri Embarba converted the resulting spot-kick to make it 1-0.

Real Madrid trail to Rayo Vallecano at half-time, having given away a penalty which was converted by Adri Embarba for the hosts. Can Zidane’s men find a way back into this #LaLiga match?

The second 45 minutes was a tight contest as Los Blancos did most of the playing in the half but to no avail.

Zidane made three tactical attacking substitutions including Brahim Diaz, Isco and Lucas Vasquez, but that change did not affect the scoreline.

Bale had a free-kick saved but the goalkeeper was equal to the task and Madrid did not really threaten the goal keeper in the half.

Real summed up a bad day as they bowed to a 1-0 defeat in the Madrid derby but have secured Champions League qualification for next season.
